Appeasement at Rio

These impossibly silly corporate CEOs may truly believe that spouting green slogans, contributing cash to green causes and wearing recycled neckties is going to keep the rabid anti-capitalists in the environmental movement at bay. But they are fooling themselves — just as natural gas interests were fooling themselves when they tried to buy-off the Sierra Club with secret donations. Ben and Jerry may be able to convincingly pull this shtick off.  But these megacorporations will require 27 coats of greenwash to be convincing.

They are the Neville Chamberlains of the capitalist world, hoping to appease an aggressor that won’t be appeased. At best, they are only buying themselves time by trying to buy-off the greens. Professional environmentalists are Occupy-like in their hatred of the profit-making world. It’s antithetical to the Soviet-style “sustainability” of the green Utopia they seek. When they’ve killed-off or crippled all the less green corporations, they’ll take aim at these “green corporations,” too. Do these fanatics seem like the kind of folks who are interested in playing nice with ”corporate climate criminals”?

Didn’t we learn anything in the 20th Century about the danger of appeasing dictators — or, in this case, those with a dictatorial mindset? The sort of “revolution” these groups seek makes no room for corporate “exploiters,” energy “profiteers” or climate criminals. These CEOs are thus cheering on a green “revolution” that, like so many revolutions before it, will turn on them in the end.
